Research Projects
Year Zero for Deaf Students (2000 – 2004)
Research has indicated that Deaf students are often disadvantaged in Higher Education (HE) because they are under-prepared in terms of their literacy, numeracy and general study skills, and in particular, their written English at HE level. Consequently, the ‘Year Zero’ research project was designed with the intention of tackling some of the barriers facing Deaf students entering Higher Education.
With funding from the HEFCE, UCLan was able to develop and deliver a new (and unique) Access Course for Deaf Students. ‘Year Zero for Deaf Students’ was aimed particularly at those Deaf people for whom English is a second language. The ‘Year Zero’ course is taken prior to a degree course and provides Deaf students with an introduction to the realities of study at HE level
