Nicola began working in Deaf Studies in 2002, coming directly to us from the British Deaf Association, where, in her role as Community Advocacy Officer for the North West, she had gained a great deal of experience working with Deaf people of all ages in a very large geographical area.  Before that, she had worked as Deaf Awareness Training Officer for Deafway in Preston, setting up and delivering Deaf Awareness Training to hundreds of people, from businesspeople to medical workers, schoolchildren to FE lecturers.  Her previous experience includes Student Welfare Officer at Derby College for Deaf people, and a wealth of both paid and voluntary work with a wide range of Deaf people.

Having trained British Sign Language (BSL) teacher, she teaches BSL and Deaf Studies, and was responsible for teaching and supervising the students on our Year 0 for Deaf Students (Y0DS) course.  Her main research interest lies in the field of applied linguistics in the context of language teaching and learning. She has focused on the effects upon British Sign Language users of being taught through their native language, and, more recently, her interest has expanded to incorporate psycholinguistic aspects of student motivation and the neurolinguistic issues associated with the reception of information via visual modes.

A real Deaf Geordie, Nicola is well known for her enthusiasm, energy and determination – and a wicked sense of humour!
