University Certificate in Communicative Competence and Signed Interaction

Course Details

One year, part-time
Specific entry requirements: CACDP Stage 2 BSL (or equivalent) and University Certificate in BSL Post Stage II (DF3002).

Course Outline

This is a one year part-time course which follows on from the University Certificate in British Sign Language (Post Stage 2).  On completion of the course, students will be awarded a University Certificate, although this course may also lead to the CACDP NVQ Level 3 in British Sign Language qualification.   This course is designed to develop students’ communicative competence in signed interactions.  Students will learn about sign language conventions and variations, whilst continually developing their sign language skills. In order to practise and develop their signing, students will need to be mixing with deaf people regularly.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

The Deaf Studies team utilise a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations, practical tasks and video work.  In addition to this, guest speakers are regularly invited to contribute their knowledge and experience to lectures. Students are expected to actively participate in class sessions and also to undertake independent study and reading.   As the University is a registered Assessment Centre for disabled students, we strive to provide the appropriate technical and human support to ensure students have equal access to their course. Deaf students on this course (as throughout the University) have access to a variety of technical equipment and can be supported by interpreters, note-takers and lip-speakers as appropriate.

Assignments for the British Sign Language modules generally involve practical tasks and in-class assessments.   For this course in particular, students are required to compile a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate their signing skills and experience.  Therefore, it is important that students have regular contact with Deaf people, either at work, socially or both.
