The course focuses on interpreting skills development and British Sign Language (BSL) tuition. On completion of the programme, you will be eligible for Membership of the Register of Sign Language Interpreters (MRSLI) and will have attained the level of language competence required for entry-level MRSLIs.
Key elements of the course will focus on promoting understanding and competence required for undertaking the role of BSL/English interpreter. Training and support strategies will be studied, alongside the wider issues of the values, practices and professionalism of interpreters and their relationship with personnel in allied occupational roles.
Teaching strategies will include formal lectures, seminars, small-group activities, workshops, 'master classes', distance learning and individual tutorials and coaching as appropriate. Lecturers will utilise a range of teaching materials including written and audio/video-taped practice texts.
You will be expected to complete a range of written assignments, including work of traditional (eg written essay) and more innovative (eg reflective accounts of interpreting awareness) kinds. You will also be required to compile a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your skills and experience.
